The "Celtic Knot" is a stylized graphical
representation of knots and braids used for decoration. Most
commonly attributed to the ancient Celts, the art form is also
commonly found in Norse and even Egyptian artifacts and is believed
to have reached it's zenith in the early centuries A.D. when they
were used in the ornamentation of Christian monuments and
manuscripts like the 8th century Book of Kells.
There is no evidence to indicate that a knot
of a particular pattern had any specific philosophical or religious
significance beyond perhaps the most obvious: the intricacy of God's
creation and man's circuitous path through life.
Nearly twenty years ago I embraced the Celtic
knot as just this sort of symbol. To me, it embodies the connection
of everything, to everything. No matter how our lives may twist,
turn and overlap they all fit together as part of the magnificent
whole. No beginning. No End. Just one of God’s beautiful creations.
